DevaCurl SuperCream Coconut Curl Styler

So while on a cruise my mom ran in to a slight problem. She found that her current haircare was NOT working in the super humid climate she found herself in. So her solution was to pick up the DevaCurl SuperCream Coconut Styling Cream (I can only assume at an American Sephora store, but who knows?). So being that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel I figured I HAD to try this. And what better way to try a product than to steal it from someone so you don't have to pay for it yourself?

Now, it was raining (actually SNOWING/RAINING) on this day and I got wet trying to take these pictures. That being said, I can say the product wasn't bad. My hair while damp in these pictures is really not frizzing out the way it normally would. But it also was kind of....... limp. All in all I certainly didn't hate the product. Had I bought it I probably would have eventually used it all up. Which in my world is a big deal. I am embarrassed to admit how many hair products get used once then given away or trashed because they just don't float my boat. So I guess in the scheme of things an OK product is pretty good in my book.

And because I am just so in love with the Lulu Frost Petra Mosaic necklace here is a close up of it. I drooled over it and put it in my shopping cart 1000 different times but could not at all justify $525USD for it. It did go down to $273 though at Neiman Marcus and well...... All I can say is the Club Monaco shirt I am wearing (with leather trim pockets at the hip) was a thrift store find I managed to score for $4 instead of its original $250. That balances out insanely priced purchases, doesn't it??

BaBylissPRO™ MiraCurl™ Professional Curl Machine (Knock Off) Review

Let me start this review by saying, I have no idea what the fuck I am talking about when it comes to curling your hair. So why I am even bothering to write a review about a hair curler is a good question to ask. Why in the world are you reading this? Also a good question. But I have been asked and asked, and thought I would write up my thoughts and reviews on this curler.

But to start off, my hair naturally:

So just to be clear, that is my NATURAL hair. No curler required. But I do often wonder what it would be like to be able to brush out my curls and have wavy or less curly hair. And if I brush out my NATURAL curls, well.... lets just say there is not a door wide enough to get my head through it if I try.

As you know if you read my blog years ago when the BaBylissPRO™ MiraCurl came out, I have been obsessed with trying it since it came out. But to spend $200 (American!!) on a machine to curl my hair seemed slightly insane. Insert this one from AliExpress. For $34 Canadian including shipping, I thought why not!

The one blaring flaw, and it is ANNOYING is that there are no labels on the buttons. They seem to have forgotten that part!

Aside from that, let me once more reiterate that I have no idea what I am doing or how to do it. A brief stint of crimping my hair in the 80s (for a good year or two I LIVED to have my hair crimped) I have never used heating tools on my hair other than a straightener!

I do think that once you get the hang of it, and "get it", the curler is easy to use.

And brushed out.

I actually can brush out my hair!

Overall, I am happy with it. For the amount I will use it (lets be honest, if I use it once every 3 months I will be impressed) I would not in a million years spend HUNDREDS on it. But for the $30 I paid, I am 100% sold!

If you want the link, feel free to email me (polishjinx at gmail dot com) but I don't want to post it blatantly and get the listing shut down!

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day® Night Cap Overnight Perfector

Night Cap is the ultimate beauty sleep for your hair. This easy-to-use solution gives you one week of shiny, vibrant, and more manageable hair overnight. Apply it before bed (to dry or damp hair), go to sleep, and wake up with:
  • Shiny hair for days. Our weightless radiance refractors outperform silicones and oils.
  • Long-lasting, vibrant color. Our patented Healthy Hair Molecule (OFPMA) combined with long-lasting cuticle sealing technology helps smooth the cuticle and reduce pigment loss.
  • More manageable hair. Amino acids condition and protect against your daily styling habits and other environmental assaults
  • Overnight results that last. These benefits last all week (up to 5 shampoos).
Night Cap is weightless, fast absorbing, pillow-safe, and perfect for all hair types.
Silicone-free. Oil-free.

This is a new product that has launched from Living Proof. The instructions say to use at night before bed. "Apply to damp or dry hair. Start with 2-3 pumps. Spread product between hands. Evenly distribute from root to tip, focusing on ends. Use more depending on hair thickness or length. Comb through and leave on overnight. Style or wash out in the morning."

I have to say I was disgusted by this when I first heard of it. To put some serum in my hair and then go to bed? I just have this image of oil stained pillowcases in the morning... Just puts me off. But after seeing an interview with Jennifer Aniston who also says she was skeptical of the formula at first also. She said she thought it would leave her hair greasy, Having tried it (I would assume she tries most of the line being a partial owner in the brand) she says she’s officially a believer. “Even if it’s shampoo day, it actually doesn’t wash out the product [entirely] because it doesn’t sit on top of the hair follicle, but absorbs into it and continues to do the work for a few days,”

Am I that easy to be sold on a product? A shareholder or owner says it works and all of a sudden "ok, sign me up!"? But sadly, in this case that seems to be it. I have to say I have LOVED the products I have tried from the brand so far. The Perfect Hair Day™ 5-in-1 Styling Treatment is my go to product when I straighten my hair (and a deluxe sample has lasted me IONS), the Instant Texture Mist while not my favourite texturizer is still great, and the Full Conditioner is nice too. So yeah, I guess the brand has proved itself to me thus far and makes me willing to give this product a try.

About DAMN TIME!!!

I brushed out my curls so you could more easily see just how bad my roots have gotten. I find it a blessing and a curse that its so hard to see when my hair is curly. Blessing because, its hard to see. But curse because I let it go sooooooooooo long without dealing with it.

Now the shade is really not that big a difference in reality but its certainly enough that the skunk stripe was starting to REALLY bug me. And prevent me from straightening my hair.

Now after a bad experience in my late teens I swore I would never dye my hair at home again. But a couple years ago I was out of town and realized how bad my roots were and decided to brave a drugstore and try this out in my hotel room. This is the light auburn shade. I learned 15 years ago that no matter what shade I tried to dye my hair or what shade I asked a hair stylist to dye it it was going to turn red. I mean WHATEVER shade. Blonde, brown, it was irrelevant. I would go in and say "my hair always turns red, I DON'T want red" and they would PROMISE me it would not turn red. And then it would. So I just chose to go with it. And its been auburn ever since.

And this is the ONLY brand I will use. Garnier Olia. Its apparently an oil based hair colour and that worried me at first. But there is no oil. It is a cream developer and a tune of colouring. No oil, not runny and best of all it has almost no smell. I have helped friends dye their hair in the past and the smell has been so horrid that I almost want to cry. But this is barely noticeable. I put a shower cap on it while its sitting (30 minutes which I know is a fairly long time) and usually watch youtube videos on my ipad while waiting for it to do its work.

And once more, I am without roots! Just in time for my trip! The sad thing is that seems to be the only thing that gets me to dye my hair these days! But I have touched up roots and tickets to NYC and Vegas so this Jinx is a content blogger at the moment.

New Garnier Fructis Style De-Constructed Texture Tease Review!

Let me start by saying I do not usually use drugstore products. I find them less likely to be silicone free, I find they usually don't work as well as higher end ones, and they have to usually be purchased to be tried. I get sent samples of higher end products all the time, and Rusk, Phillip B, Oribe, Bumble and Bumble, Living Proof and others I get as samples in boxes or in stores and can try before buying. In a drugstore you have to buy it and hope you like it. For every 10 drugstore products I try, I am impressed by one or two. Which is why I simply stopped buying them.

But the Garnier haricare was on sale for $2.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart last week and I had $1 off coupons. So that made them $1.99. For $1.99 I was willing to try!

And I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE this product! It has Calcium carbonate for texturizing and polyvinylcaprolactam for volume in it. AND NO SILICONE! And apparently Allure Beauty gave it an award for best of 2014! The instructions are just like that of any texture spray:

And like every other texture spray out there, you need a LOT of it. So to find a product for $4 (I paid $2!!) that works as well is amazing! The smell is strong and kind of fruity but fades quicky, And the number one test before it goes on my hair:

In the above picture you can kind of see a big circle that has no pores, lines or anything visible on my hand. and in the below picture that same circle seems kind of wet? That is the product. ITS CLEAR!!!!!!!!!!! No white or chalky product to be seen on the hair!! HUZZAH!

Now for a before and after picture: Before I put it in:

And right after I put it in. So in my hair right now is NOTHING other than the conditioner I used to wash my hair this texture spray.

I also did not use nearly as much texture spray as I tend to when using other brands. Now obviously I would use a bit of a curl balm or serum or something to get rid of the frizz at the top near the scalp, But overall, I am IN LOVE with this product. If you want volume and texture (though the texture part is hard to capture on camera when my hair is so curly) I HIGHLY recommend running out and picking up a bottle of this! Garnier hit it out of the park with this product!

Philip B Light Weight Deep Conditioning Creme Rinse Paraben Free Formula Review

I got this in May of last year. Almost 9 months ago. It came in my Bergdorf Goodman Glossybox and for some reason I just never got around to trying it. I am making a concerted effort to use up and try all my products. I moved two months ago and in the process have managed to give away now SIX large shopping bags full of products and this is part of the cleaning and purging. USING!

I like that the product comes sealed. Its a little thing so many companies overlook and for me it makes a really big difference. Now this product comes in two formulas. Classic and Paraben Free. I really have no opinions one way or the other on paraben free, or even sulphate (or sulfate for you Americans) free products. I do automatically use a fraction of the sulphates simply by virtue of my not using shampoo.

As you can see, this product is THICK. Like look at it hang out of the tube thick. It also SMELLS!! It has a very strong fragrance that is kind of a floral scent. But a very strong and stinky one (from the girl who hates floral scents keep in mind).

Now, for the claims it makes:
Packed with plant and flower extracts, this light-weight conditioner tames frizz, seals split ends, and leaves hair silky and tangle-free
A rich, fortifying blend of African Shea Butter, Wheat Germ and Soy Proteins locks in moisture
Vitamin-rich essential oils (California Lemon, Orange, Lavender and Gardenia) give softness, shine and a sumptuous, fresh garden scent
color & keratin-treatment safe

Now it certainly tamed the frizz. We are not talking about a magic potion that got RID of the frizz. But it made a big difference. My hair didn't feel any more moisturized than normal if I was being real, but it also was not at all drying. The big issue was that the scent is both strong and it LINGERS! So much so that smelling my hair an hour later I could still smell it. And for someone like me who hates floral scents that is an absolute deal breaker.

I do LOVE the feel of this shampoo, the texture of it, the way it works, the results. EVERYTHING you want in a conditioner EXCEPT the scent. And the scent is a deal breaker So sadly, I have passed on the rest of this tube to my mother.

Above is as it was drying, and below is when its basically dry. No hair products in the hair and it really has almost NO frizz! That is fricken amazing in itself! LOVE the way it works!!

This can be purchased at Bergdorf Goodman, the Phillip B website, Nordstrom, the Skinstore and other retailers, both online and in store. It comes in a 2oz, 6oz or 32oz size tubes and the prices are $10, $26 and $90 respectively. This is the $10/2oz size

Overall if floral scents dont bother you, I highly recommend trying this .

Modere Beauty Box Breakdown And Review!

Now let me start by saying this review is VERY late in coming. The company contacted me the last week of October and due to an address mix up it didn't arrive until the 3rd week of November, and then to make matters even worse, I never picked it up until the 2nd week of December. So I have had this box almost two months!

Now this might be the most COMPLICATED beauty box service that I have reviewed so I will do my best to explain it all fully to you! But first, a bit of a hopefully simple explanation.

You sign up, get charged NOTHING and get sent the following five items:

Now disregard the eye gel on the right for a minute. The other four items you get in full sized, but you also get mini sample sizes. You get to keep the mini sample sizes, and the full sized eye gel (which is a gift for you to keep) and the other four full sized items you have to decide what to do with. You can either keep them all and get charged $79.99 which saves you $50 from paying each item separately, return them all and get charged nothing (but keep the samples and the eye gel) OR keep one or two of the items you like and get charged the retail price of them. I sure hope this is making sense!!

So hopefully that makes sense to everyone!! The box came looking like this:

The first item is the Exfoliant. It costs $12.99 if you choose to keep it, and of course, no cost for using the little sample.

Now in the book that comes with it, along with the prices of everything, it gives you all the instructions and details about each product.

Now to be honest, I didn't LOVE this product. its not a bad product by any means, and this isn't a terrible thing, but the beads are larger and firmer than I would personally like. So FOR ME, this product doesn't really work. That being said, it wasn't really a harsh exfoliant at all. It was gentle, I just found the beads too large for my liking. There really is not much scent to this, so that isn't a worry a problem. I just find the texture for me not to be ideal.

This anti aging serum has a retail price of $39.99.

Now I have to say, one of the best parts of this serum is the pump. Its a great feature on the tube! Now to be fair, I had no interest in trying this and no expectation of enjoying it. I was pleasantly surprised however. I do not use anti wrinkle and ant aging products so I was not thinking I would like this much. My skin is very sensitive, and while its a constant battle to deal with acne, my skin is also VERY dehydrated and near my nose its so dry it flakes. Flaking dry skin with acne. How lucky can I be? But this serum is a wonderful consistency and it smooths across the skin nicely absorbing in almost immediately. Its very thin and watery (milky looking), and I really have not noticed a visible affect. BUT...... I have also not noticed any negative affects. It absorbs quickly, feels lovely on the skin and while it feels a bit sticky initially, that does not translate to feeling sticky on the skin. So while I cant say I see a difference, I can also say I dont notice a negative difference in the moisture or texture of my skin while using this versus my normal serum. Not quite sure. Is that good? Either way, I will happily continue to use this!

The Antioxidant Gel retails for $24.99.  As you can see below, the applicator is different yet again. I have to say, I appreciate that while they stick to tubes, they do not have a standard one size fits all packaging and pay attention to not only the product but on the applicator as well,

The gel is......... I dont even know. Seriously. Its a yummy orangey smelling gel that has a texture akin to a silicone type face primer. It dries down to an almost powdery feel. It smells amazing though but I guess I have not used it enough to notice if it brightens like it says it does. I also dont understand what it IS. Its supposed to be put on the skin and then followed by a day or night cream. Its a powerful vitamin C enriched..... gel. But I put serums on my face before creams. Is this another type of serum? Is it used WITH the serum, or instead of? What is the difference from this to a serum? I simply don't understand why they would add this AND a serum in the box. But it sure smells nice. It does have silicone it and I would expect this to be a great makeup primer to be honest. Might be worth a try that way!

This hair serum comes in a pump like the face serum. It retails for $21.99. It also has silicone in it meaning I can not use it. I did however ask my mom to try it out for me. She tried it once, said she noticed no difference and could not be bothered to try it again. I cant say anything about it myself though. I just haven't tried it and thus cant say anything about it.

Now this eye gel has a retail value of $29.99 and is yours to keep free regardless of if you keep the box or if you send it back in the postage paid packaging. This is a clear gel that goes on a bit sticky at first, but it will dissipate if you leave it on your eyes for a bit of time. I have not really tried this enough to give a strong opinion of it one way or the other yet, and will update you when I do. But I have very sensitive skin and try to not use more than one new product at a time.

So overall, its an interesting concept, great way to try before you buy some products IF (and I stress IF) you are diligent in trying them as soon as you get them. Because you will be charged $79.99 plus tax if you do not return the items in 7 days.
